💥 How to Get Anything You Want in Your Career
Over the past 12 years (woah), I've coached hundreds of driven millennials on designing careers they love.
Through these conversations, I’ve discovered that there are 3 important keys that help you get ANYTHING you want in your career.
Whether it's a better 9-5 job, a path into entrepreneurship, or a multi-hyphenate career that blends both, I can confidently tell you that you have the most autonomy in your career when you stack these 3 things.
I call it the “Lucky Girl Career Formula.”
(or Lucky Guy, Person, Maverick, etc!)
When combined, the ingredients in this formula help you:
💥 Create new opportunities whenever you want them
💥 Rally a network of champions that open doors for you
💥 Unlock a more meaningful way to succeed on your own terms
I've personally used the Lucky Girl Career Formula to build a business around my expertise, find a supportive 9-5 job in a crazy market, and become recognized as a thought leader in topics I'd talk for hours about anyway!
And it's beyond possible for you, too.
Let's dive in, yeah?
1. Clarity
What kind of opportunities excite you the most?
Who do you want to impact with your expertise?
When do you feel most purposeful and aligned in your workday?
Where do you want to start conversations and be recognized?
What kind of lifestyle/personal enjoyment is it all for?
Without the clarity on how you want to leverage your relationships and personal brand, the right opportunities can't find you.
2. Relationship Capital
The #1 regret my career coaching clients have when they're itching for a new job?
That they didn't keep their network warm when they didn't need a job.
Relationship capital is built when you make "deposits" without asking for anything in return-- when you check in on your connections when don't need anything yourself.
Investing in relationship capital is actually very easy:
Keep some sort of Rolodex of your strongest connections (personal and professional). I love to use Notion for this.
Include 1-3 details about each person that can be easy conversation starters ("loves the Yankees," "reads Romantasy," "pivoted from education to HR," "2 young kids and a dog named Stanley")
Schedule reminders to reach out to each person every 3-6 months with a short message like: "Hey, I remembered seeing that you scored tickets to the Eras Tour! How was the show? Would love to hear your updates on work and life!"
Let them respond-- they'll definitely ask to hear your updates, too
Share what you're working on, tell them you're thinking about making a career change, or let them know you've been monetizing your personal brand and would love for them to send new clients your way!
Small deposits in the relationships bank keep you top of mind for all the right reasons.
3. An Intentional Personal Brand
Not the "default" personal brand that comes with your job title.
I'm talking about the intentional personal brand you build yourself for the kind of opportunities you truly want.
When you rely on your default personal brand (letting the basic info about your career speak for you), we have no idea what makes you different from every other Mid-Market Account Executive or People Operations Manager.
We have no idea that you're a dazzling public speaker, a keen copywriter, passionate about social justice, or that you coach Little League every Thursday night.
And those are the things that make us feel connected to you.
Those are things we'll think about when we have an opportunity-- we'll reach out to the person behind the job title, not the pages of other people with the same title on LinkedIn.
We'll think about you.
Clear Goal + People Who Know How to Help You + Advocating For Yourself = Anything You Want.
