đź’Ą 38: How to Job Search Now if You Want to be an Entrepreneur Later

+ specific roles to look for

Multi-hyphenates like us know something that most of our peers forget: you don’t wait for your future to arrive- you create your future now.

So if you know in your bones that you’re growing beyond your 9-5 and will eventually start your own thing– whether it’s a full time venture or a part-time hustle– you don’t have to wait until that day comes to start getting an edge!

Entrepreneurship comes with a steep learning curve for those of us who have been masters of the corporate system.

Many of us corporate rockstars– myself included– become subject matter experts in our roles, going deep into the skills and leadership capabilities that will help us climb to the next rung on our team’s ladder.

Entrepreneurship, though? That’s a Generalist’s game.

As long as you’re running solo, you’re the Chief Everything Officer: creating the thing, marketing it, selling it, building a movement around it, and keeping the backend lights on.

Even if/when you decide to hire team members, the buck still stops with you.

The great news is, almost every skill you need to be an confident entrepreneur can be learned in your 9-5 if you know what to prioritize!

Think of your next corporate role like your Internship in Entrepreneurship, and squeeze out all of the business-prep juice until you’re ready to launch.

OK specifically, your success with common side hustles like content creation, consulting, coaching, and e-commerce depends on your savviness in a few key areas.

So in your next corporate role, look for a job that will help you get better at:

Creating something from scratch

Jobs to consider: Community Manager, Graphic Design, Program Management, Curriculum Design, Learning & Development

Marketing a product or service

Jobs to consider: Product Marketing, Social Media Management, Copywriting, Internal Communications, Talent Acquisition

Closing a sale

Jobs to consider: Talent Acquisition, Business Development Account Executive, Donor Relations

Balancing the $$$

Jobs to consider: A more senior position that requires budget management, HR Business Partner, Operations Management

Creating an exceptional client experience

Jobs to consider: Customer Experience Associate, Operations Management, Client Account Manager, Client Enablement, any front-of-house retail role

Representing your team in front of execs, investors, or other Big Cheese

Jobs to consider: Chief of Staff, Founder’s Associate, Talent Acquisition, HR Business Partner, Facilitator, Investor Relations

It wasn’t until I found myself on near-daily sales calls for Pivot With Purpose and 1:1 coaching that I wished I’d a way to practice within the cushion of my full-time job!

The day you’re calling the shots will be here sooner than you think!
